This photograph aptly captures Mark Twain’s World.
Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend and looks twice as old as all of these out together.
Walking down the ghats of Banaras you will often encounter people performing their art or rituals peacefully on the Ganga ghat, this makes Banaras an extraordinary place for street photography.

A group of tribal women & children wait to head home by public transport after working in the fields. The gay abandon in the children is palpable as is the joy among the women at the early end to this well-spent spring day. Bright smiles still greet passers-by in rural India where pastoral lives haven't yet fully made way for urbanisation. A village in Eastern Rajasthan.

I was working with an NGO who build schools in places where there are none. This little girl walked up to me holding a piece of cardboard, almost like a security blanket. Her curiosity for the camera was stronger than her apprehension. I took the picture almost as a reflex. Little did I know that within ten days the entire country would go into lockdown, and with it any chances of her going to school. While most photographs capture the present moment, some rare ones end up capturing the future.

Memories are a powerful, eternal thing. My on-going project Collecting Memories was a way for me to step back from the trappings of modern tools, and explore the essence of my photography. No automation or help from digital tools, and every aspect of the final photograph determined by experience and instinct. This process allowed me to appreciate and bond with my work during 2020 at a much deeper level than before. Sometimes, it helps to slow down, if we want to break past our own limits.

Taken in London on March 6, 2020, at a time when the virus threat was not yet taken too seriously by the British authorities. A discarded newspaper, bringing with it a sign of the months to follow.

The Lockdown drastically changed everything. The massive doors of Jama Masjid, which used to always be overcrowded, were closed to the general public during the month of Ramadan. The caretaker of the mosque looks out at the empty streets of Old Delhi.

The picture was taken just after the weather had cleared, after Cyclone Amphan had passed. It was very clear in the early morning. My wife is an early riser and was fretting that she could not go out. Sunlight was streaming in, creating a lovely silhouette as she sat at the window, with the foreground curtains creating a natural frame.

Chennai Marina during the lockdown. Being an east-facing city, I love to capture the mesmerizing dawns or day-breaks. On normal days, walkers would occupy the whole beach area. It turned into this deserted vista ever since the Govt. implemented the lockdown from March 2020.

During this prolonged domestic pandemic life, we look to ladders and their views for some reassurance. A few lines from a poem-in-progress by Melissa Alipalo's 'LADDERS':
...As if every rung was a lung singing, "Someone, come." Lift yourself for a glimpse of the other side waiting. Gift yourself what misses you, even if how much cannot be measured

Farmers, the backbone of India. An important part of rice farming is to replant the saplings in another piece of land. Here, this farmer is grouping the rice saplings into smaller groups, which will be planted in the neighboring field. Age did not stop this man from doing his duty to help feed his nation when it was needed the most.

Nature during lockdown, and the people who stayed on-duty for humanity. Nature shows us that letting go is what lets us grow. We let go of our emotions, grudges, and disappointments, and learn to live a life with intent. 'Never caught off-guard' was our guard, whose un-existence till now became so valuable.

In 2004, the Gemini circus came to Ahmedabad and was being set up on University grounds. The news reached me somehow, and a 'cityscape' of an elephant being unloaded from a truck was my first photograph of them.
It was after 12 long years that the coveted subject 'The Circus' was returning to me. In the process, I got to peek into the lives of clowns as they shared their personal stories - their ups & downs, and the battles behind the happy masks they proudly wore during their performances.
This insight into the lives of complete strangers gave me a new direction and strength. Sometimes, I still go to their modest tents, to catch up with my clown friends & share some fun moments over a cup of chai.
The Circus, my first beau on my journey as a photographer, has given me a blissful feeling which has been rather impossible to replicate!

However much we focus on other aspects of this year, but what all of us saw was a loss of someone close - family, friend, colleague - to Covid. This photograph was shot on “All Saint’s Day” in Mumbai. Time and weather may erase the paint off of tombstones, but the memories of the near and dear departed remain in our heart. Two girls painstakingly (re)painting the name on the grave of their parent, and renewing their connection with their dear departed.

The only pair of slippers is broken; the only direction known is now the empty railway track, as there will be no trains towards home. A young migrant labourer’s barefoot walk from Noida, Delhi-NCR to his home Muzzafarpur, Bihar during the country-wide lockdown, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands of migrant workers like him walked home with their families after having lost their jobs, their savings dried up, or were facing an uncertain future. Many ended up dying to accidents, hunger, and illness during this treacherous journey in the middle of the Indian summer.

For a photographer, the photograph is made well before the press of shutter button.
This one was special, and required special preparations. 3000m up in the high altitudes of the Himalayas, 300 miles travelled away from my home during pandemic times, & 3 days of preparation before the start of travel, to get myself tested and other necessary permissions/documentations. A once in a lifetime experience to frame!
I enjoy taking myself out of my comfort zone and hurling myself into the unknown. Because it is during those scary moments - I am able to see that I am like a comet hitting a new atmosphere: I illuminate magnificently. I produce images I am proudest of. Knowing that I have been able to experience something that will only happen again 6800 years later (year 8786 next) can be enlightening. That's what it takes. Neowise, or Comet C/2020 F3, in all its blazing glor

I think one of the most important themes for me in 2020 has been the lack of human touch and the idea of loneliness. We have been forced to connect with people from a distance, and so many of us have been bereft of the idea of human touch. Once the lockdown had lifted, I travelled to Varanasi - a place I had never been to before. In many ways it was a need to see how life looked post-lockdown in another part of the country.

I have had opportunity to photograph the Chatth festival over the past few years, but this year it was very different. There were directives for social distancing and for wearing masks, which made the whole event far different from past experiences. People have so much faith and energy for Chatth Mata. Trust me, being there and observing these beautiful moments of people devoting everything to God made me realise that we all have someone who will protect us.

I came to Zurich on a repatriation flight in August 2020. After eight months of separation while I was confined in Mumbai, I was finally able to be with my two teenage daughters who live a continent away. In fact, my arrival in Switzerland felt surreal. This made me think of how bridging spatial distances plays such a crucial role in our lives. It gave me the inspiration for my new photo series titled Mobility - an exploration of commuting in times of Corona.

To deal with the months-long lockdown blues and withdrawal from nature and wildlife while cooped up in Delhi, I decided to make a trip to Ranthambore in September once things started opening up again. It was a hot post-monsoon morning when we spotted this gorgeous tigress sprawled in the shade of the thick foliage a couple of feet away from the dirt track, protecting herself from the strong mid-morning sun. She was lying in a way that I was able to focus on one of her eyes. This photograph is all thanks to her beauty and the lovely setting. As a keen wildlife enthusiast, I literally thank the wildlife for a wonderful break from what was a trying time being locked indoors.
